What is steadfastness and why is it important? How being steadfast can be part of you.
“Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. “

Steadfastness – Part 1
What is steadfastness?
We hear about steadfastness sometimes, but it can be one of the often-overlooked fruit of the Spirit. This is a very important fruit we should ask God to cultivate within us. This fruit is the fruit of discipline. Something that, in the west, is often forgotten about, because of it’s not quick or fast paced – it takes a while for it to be grown within you. To have it as part of our character though, is essential to overall wellbeing.
What is it? Read on to find out what being steadfast means and how it connects to God and our health journey.
Standing Strong
Luke tells us that we are to stand strong, “stand firm, and you will win life.” (~ Luke 21: 19). Standing strong until the end. Being immovable in convictions. Not changing your convictions because of someone’s else’s opinion. In your health journey, being steadfast can mean to keep working out on the days you planned to, even when you are tired and don’t feel like it.
Consistency
Steadfastness also refers to being consistent. In thought, habit and actions. This is something I’m continuously working on – so you’re not alone in that girl! Consistency takes time and practice.
“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” (Galatians 6:9)

Characteristic of God
God is steadfast. It is one of his character traits. He does not waver in His love grace and mercy for us. He cannot love us any more than He already does. The Bible states and shows that God is continually steadfast in His faithfulness to us. He never lets us down. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (~Lamentations 3:22-23).
Sometimes, it can be difficult to see that God is steadfast towards us, especially when we have no other reference of steadfast experience in our lives. But I know God is because His word says so. We have to take that leap of faith and believe God is and will continue to be steadfast towards us. We have to know God’s character. Easier said than done of course 🙂 But just ask Him, and get into community and show up and keep showing up. Spend quiet time with God and give yourself and God a chance to show you how faithful he really is.

The Fruit of Steadfastness
Steadfastness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Did you know some fruits grow on trees? Haha yeh of course we all know that. So, how long do trees take to grow? Well, uh, quite a while…
Yeah. It’s all good work, but being steadfast requires patience. Give it time! Don’t give up because you’re not seeing or feeling any results. Stay the course, no matter what it is, and eventually, the plant will sprout, grow and bear fruit.
A Commandment
Steadfastness is a commandment from God. Yes, Paul wrote it, but it is a commandment from God.
Now, many of us flinch at the word “commandment” but I would argue that that comes from an impure arrogant spirit that strives to be independent, a rebellious spirit that does not listen to God, it could stem from hurt or pain or simple ignorance. I would ask you to question and challenge your assumptions of what you have always been taught. Especially coming from American views. This is not about politics, please don’t think that way at all. But this is about expanding yourself from the inside out with God’s love and guidance, into becoming who you were always designed to be.
God tells us to work on this, as a good Father. A good parent who knows what’s best for us. As His children, as ambassadors of the Kingdom of Heaven, this is an internal trait that we are to cultivate within ourselves with the Holy Spirit. God wants us to be able to handle this life and destiny He’s called us to. He wants us to be healthy and happy and handle it well. Growing in steadfastness, we will be able to steward things well.
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” (~1 Corinthians 15:58).
I find this can be difficult to think about and do sometimes, because in the moment being steadfast, being consistent in working out, eating healthy, pursuing God through Bible study can be more difficult (at first!) to build a habit of. With prayer and hard work with God, girl you totally got this! Start small and keep building up! (Speaking of starting small, check out more about the mustard seed parable…)
