What IS “Quiet Time” and why is it important?

Quiet time simply means spending quality time with God on a consistent basis that works for you. God is available 24/7 and will never miss a meeting with you.
Imma be real with you girl, establishing a consistent time with God can be SUPER difficult in the beginning. Or, like me when I first heard this concept, I get off to a good streak for about 3-4 days, and then towards the end of the week, or the next week, I taper off and other things (like life and sleep) start getting in my way. Before I know it, I feel frustrated and tired and realize it’s because I’ve missed time with God. After much practice and experimentation, I’ve found a way to be consistent, by linking this habit with another habit (drinking yummy coffee) right in the morning when I wake up. (I found this concept of habit linking through reading Atomic Habits). And not to be dramatic or anything, but through establishing this time it really has transformed my life from the inside out.
Post Summary
Short for time? Here’s a quick summary of this blog post.

~ Following Jesus is about a personal relationship with God as a friend.
~ There is no specific way to spend time with God. It is about finding what works best for you and your life.
~ Three simple steps to help you start a habit and lifestyle of intentional time with God: 1. Find a time and something to write on. 2. Pick a passage to read and take notes. 3. Pray
See, following Jesus isn’t about following man-made rules and rituals to give you “good, happy” feelings, or to make you feel superior to another because you behaved a certain way. Following Jesus is truly about being in a relationship with Jesus and living the rest of your life from that beautiful place of active rest.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
matthew 7:7-8
Spending time with Jesus is like spending time with a close friend. Consistency, compassion, and dedication are the keys to most things in life. We are creatures of habit, so might as well hack our human nature and create it into something positive that’s conducive to our growth, in all dimensions of our being. Why? Because we have the power to with God, and well, why not? Haha 😊

3 Steps to an Awesome Quiet Time with Jesus
1.Pick a Good Time and Find a Journal

When you know you have time to breathe, rest, and collect your thoughts. I like doing this first thing I the morning when the sun is rising and I’m clear headed before the day kicks in. Make sure to grab your favorite coffee or tea too haha 😀
2. Find a Bible Passage to Read and Take Notes
Answer what’s real and authentic to you. I usually write whatever comes to mind first and as much as I want. You don’t have to time yourself or set limits. If you prefer guidance doing this for the first time, set a timer for one minute and spend one minute writing what comes to mind for each section.
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
2 Corinthians 3:18
- Read a Bible passage
To know God, we must know His Word. After we have connected to ourselves and removed some blockages (or became aware of them) separating us from deeply connecting to Him, it is best to see what He has to say. If you’re just starting out reading the Bible for the first time, or trying to get back into the groove, where do you even start? The Bible can be overwhelming and confusing at first, but I’d recommend starting with the basics – John. After John, then I recommend Ephesians to know and hold onto the promises we’ve been given to receive through Jesus’ blood on the cross. And then you can read the four gospels and anything you want and feel called to read.
Consistently spending time reading and meditating/mulling over the Bible is essential for living with and knowing God. It brings us closer to God through Jesus. No two experiences reading the same passage are ever alike.
3. Prayer and Reflection
Prayer just means talking to God. It is about speaking what’s on your mind and heart, and then listening and preparing yourself for a response. Remember, God does answer our prayers, just not usually in the way we want or think is most obvious. He does answer within His word, but he can answer through other means. Praying and reflecting creates space for us to connect with and hear from God.
